Water & Sewerage Master Plan - Keraniganj
Inception Report Summary

Integrated Potable Water & Sewerage System Master Plan

Strategic roadmap for Keraniganj Upazila to transition from groundwater dependency to sustainable surface water sources and modern sanitation infrastructure by 2060.

Study Area

166.87 km² (12 Unions)

Current Pop. (2011)

603,114

Consultant

VITTI Sthapati Brindo Ltd.

Report Date

September 2019

Water Strategy

  • Shift to Surface Water (Padma/Meghna)
  • District Metered Areas (DMA)
  • 130 LPCD Design Criteria

Sewerage Strategy

  • Centralized STP on Buriganga
  • Sludge Management Plan
  • Network Rehabilitation
Master Plan Component 01

Potable Water Supply

Transitioning from depleting groundwater sources to a sustainable surface water based network.

Projected Water Demand (MCM/yr)

Source: WARPO Report

Demand peaks in 2035 due to urbanization, stabilizing by 2050 due to demand management.

Groundwater Depletion

Water levels dropping ~0.5m/year since the 1990s. Upper Dupitila aquifer is stressed.

Future Sources

Reliance on Padma & Meghna rivers. 35 MCM/yr capacity target for 2035.

Pollution Challenge

Peripheral rivers (Buriganga/Dhaleswari) highly polluted (low DO, high BOD) requiring advanced treatment.

Master Plan Component 02

Sewerage & Sanitation

Current infrastructure is rudimentary. The plan proposes a shift from septic tanks to a centralized water-borne sewerage system for high-density zones.

Sanitation Strategy Matrix

01

High Density Areas

Water-borne sewerage system connected to a central Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

Target Pop: 662,869
02

Low Density Areas

Improved on-site sanitation (septic tanks) with scheduled sludge management.

Target Pop: 806,403
03

Infrastructure

Construction of 10-hectare STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) on Buriganga river bank.

Proposed STP Location

Buriganga River Bank (South)

Sustainable Development Goals

The Master Plan is directly aligned with SDG Goal 6. It aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all residents of Keraniganj by 2030.

Target 6.1
Safe & Affordable Drinking Water
Target 6.2
Adequate Sanitation & Hygiene
Target 6.3
Improve Water Quality (Pollution Control)
Target 6.4
Water-Use Efficiency

Progress Update (Inception Phase)

  • Reconnaissance survey completed in 12 Unions.
  • ODK Household Survey (2727 samples) done.
  • Initial stakeholder meetings with DPHE & DWASA.
  • GIS Base Map preparation initiated.

"Prioritizing 5 unions for the first phase of detailed planning and design."
